Hello Fellow DeKalb County Republicans,

On Monday, May 31st Americans across the country will remember the brave men and women who gave their lives for our country. Red, white and blue will span the landscapes of American cities as flags are placed on the graves of fallen soldiers. Initially known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971.

But it is easy to forget what Memorial Day actually means while we’re spending time by the pool, at the beach or enjoying a BBQ this weekend with family and
friends. But the true reason for the holiday signifies much more than “having a nice long weekend”. Memorial Day gives us a chance to pay homage to the brave men and women who gave their lives defending our great Nation, strengthening America, and helping spread freedom across the globe.“We can never replace them. We can never repay them. But we can always remember. And today, that is what we are doing — we remember.” President Donald J. Trump Memorial Day 2017 Arlington National Cemetery

Today and in the days to come, I invite you to join me — wherever you may be, whatever you may be doing — to contemplate the cost of our freedom, and to
remember, honor, and celebrate the great heroes who laid down their lives so you and I can remain free. And to those men and women who fought for peace at home and around the globe, thank you for your service. This Memorial Day we are, thankfully, not fighting a civil war, but we are nonetheless engaged in a battle for the soul of our nation. While we are remembering those that made the ultimate sacrifice, let’s reflect deeply on the sacrifices of those we honor. Let’s remember that they died in devotion to the idea of America, a free country that is dedicated to “We the People.” With Gratitude on Behalf of the DeKalb GOP,

Regards,
