National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day | December 7, 1941 – December 7, 2021

Dear <Insert First Name>,

Eighty years ago today just before 08:00 the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked the neutral United States at Naval Station Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii, killing 2,403 Americans and injuring 1,178 others.  The surprise early morning attack sank four U.S. Navy battleships and damaged four others. It also damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, and one minelayer. Aircraft losses were 188 destroyed and 159 damaged.

The day after the attack, President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed a joint session of the 77th United States Congress, calling December 7 “a date which will live in infamy”. Within an hour of Roosevelt’s speech, Congress declared war on the Empire of Japan.  The occasion of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day will always be one of the most important ones in the American history as it united a divided nation with untethered calls to “remember Pearl Harbor!”

It is also important that we remember the Greatest Generation as the US Department of Veterans Affairs cites that there are only 240,329 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II are still alive in 2021.

Today on this “day of infamy” eighty years later, we are once again a bitterly divided nation.  But in the spirit of appreciating our nation’s freedoms, let us set aside our differences to come together to honor the victims and survivors of Pearl Harbor.  For a few remaining these are our husbands and brothers.   For many Americans now, these heroes are our parents, grandparents and great grandparents.  Let us remember their courage, their fighting spirit and how they faced the odds even in the darkest moments of a deadly surprise attack. Today, we remember them and always. We thank them for their service and for making the ultimate sacrifice.

May God Bless America on December 7, 2021 and every day thereafter. Thank you.
